Nicki Minaj slows it down on her new single ‘Pills N Potions’, and the result is surprisingly good. From the title alone, I expected ‘Pills N Potions’ to be an upbeat track mixing Nicki’s flair for rap and pop like in ‘Pound the Alarm’ or ‘Automatic’. The ballad was actually very enjoyable from the first listen, and it showcases Nicki’s voice nicely, and probably will gain her some new fans that may have written off her talent previously, thinking it was mostly autotune or production.
With ‘Pills n Potions’ we see a new side to Nicki, one where she’s vulnerable and reflective, quite different to the larger than life insane raps to which we’ve grown accustomed. Nicki does rap, but the real highlight of the song is her singing. It lends a nice touch to the stripped back track, and never compromises the signature ‘Nicki-ness’ of it all.
The most memorable lyrics from ‘Pills n Potions’ comes in the first verse, when Nicki calls out the hypocrites that say they love her, but don’t truly mean it.
Self-righteous and entitled, but they swearin’ on the bible that they love you
When really they no different from all your rivals
But I still don’t wish death on ‘em; I just reflect on ’em
Despite the fact that they say they love her with no real meaning, just like society has come to ritualize the act of swearing on a bible in a courtroom, Nicki holds no ill-will, and instead chooses to think and reflect on their actions, and hopefully better herself through them.
Take a listen to ‘Pills n Potions’ above. Do you think Nicki has another smash hit on her hands?
