South Africa’s Cubbi brings a fresh and dynamic melody to an indie-pop beat on new single ‘GTFO.’ It’s a surprisingly raw and honest track, confronting and struggling with a party lifestyle and dealing with inner demons.
Cubbi wrote the song while in a “dark” place in his life. “I didn’t know how to handle it, so I was self-medicating, doing a lot of drugs and drinking a lot,” he explained. “The first half of the song was written in that state of mind so it came from a very honest and raw place. I remember playing it back to myself and having a bit of a sob, I’m not exactly sure why. It’s funny because it wasn’t until I went to rehab months later that I was able to finish writing the song.”
The resulting song ends up holding a mirror to pop culture while also being a great entry into pop music. The chorus is particularly infectious, with Cubbi spelling out GTFO with rapidfire and explaining there’s “parts of me you don’t want to know.”
