Fergie and Nicki Minaj have come together for Fergie’s new track ‘You Already Know,’ and a music video was released yesterday to accompany the song. The result isn’t quite as bad as Katy Perry’s ‘Swish Swish,’ where Nicki’s verse is the only redeemable quality, but the new Fergie track still doesn’t knock it out of the park.
The good: Fergie, sonically, is at her most Black Eyed Peas (ie. very good.) The beat, rhythm, and production feel like if The Dutchess met a Black Eyed Peas album, giving it the perfect mix of soul and flavor. Not surprising, considering the track was produced by will.i.am. Fergie is reinvigorated, and it comes across on the track which she navigates with ease. Likewise, Nicki’s rap is on point and harmonious with the song, feeling like it was intended from the get-go rather than an afterthought to have the song appeal to multiple genres.
The bad? The song as a whole is just rather bland. The chorus is catchy, the verses are fast paced and keep attention easily…but the song fails to leave a lasting impression. Compared to Fergie’s previous releases, she’s capable of far better. ‘You Already Know’ isn’t bad, but it’s not all that great, either.
With Fergie’s second solo album, Double Dutchess, coming out in less than ten days, the song serves as good promotional material, but here’s hoping that the rest of the album has other single-worthy tracks that will leave a more lasting impression.
