Tomorrow x Together’s Yeonjun seems to be ready to shed his innocent idol image with a spicy new solo single, ‘GGUM’. The track and its accompanying music video show a more mature side to the Korean singer-songwriter.
Sonically, ‘GGUM’ is a lot darker of a track than what you’d expect from a Tomorrow x Together release, with a deep and pounding bassline. Yeonjun also delivers a much sexier vocal tone on the track, perfectly matching the song’s lyrics with their cocky swagger and words of defiance. “I’mma stay sweet forever [but] I’m always on fire,” he growls on the track.
The music video for ‘GGUM’ takes Yeonjun’s dark side and pushes it even further. The clip, directed by 2eehyein, kicks things off by immediately letting the viewer know this isn’t your typical K-Pop music video. A dripping wet Yeonjun drops a stick of gum with the words “Have a F**king nice day!” on it. Didn’t see that coming, did you?
Throughout the rest of the video, Yeonjun makes his way throughout a television news studio dancing and popping his bubble gum with an incredibly suggestive and TikTok worthy choreography on the chorus that involves dipping into a split and grabbing his crotch.
The K-Pop landscape has been evolving for years now beyond it’s picture perfect image that many have come to know and admire, and Yeonjun’s solo effort shows just how much diversity K-Pop can offer in both its sound and image. The song itself is incredibly catchy, and the music video elevates Yeonjun’s sleek and brooding nature to the next level. It’s undoubtedly a new side to the singer — but I doubt any of his fans from Tomorrow x Together are complaining at seeing him in this new light.
