Dove Cameron has been proving herself as an unstoppable force in the pop music scene, with 2022’s ‘Boyfriend’ being a mainstream smash that was hard to escape (not that you’d want to), and her follow up releases — ‘Breakfast’ and ‘Bad Idea’ showed that the former Disney star has talent and a drive to innovate and spice up the genre.
Cameron is a master of taking the predictable and spinning it on its head, adding her own signature flair that often incorporates her queer identity to make music that speaks to her community while both empowering them and giving them some good music to dance to. Cameron keeps doing the unexpected with her first song of 2023 — a slow jam duet with Khalid called ‘We Go Down Together.’
The song and its accompanying video are a slow burn — building sultry and sexual tension lyrically over a relaxed and composed instrumental. Cameron and Khalid’s vocals complement each other breathtakingly, and Cameron shows a more tender side here; while her music has always been keen to explore concepts of love, sex and power, ‘We Go Down Together’ is Cameron at her most hopelessly romantic. “You are everything I’m living for,” she croons before the chorus: “If you go down, then we go down together.”
