MTV Video Music Awards 2014 Predictions

My, how the year is flying by! The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards are upon us once again, and the competition is fiercer than ever with the music industry seeing some amazing new talent emerge this past year. Take a look at POParazzi’s picks for some of the categories below, and be sure to tune in to the ceremonies on Sunday, August 24th at 9/8c.

Artist to Watch

5sos

Nominees: 5 Seconds of Summer, Charli XCX, Fifth Harmony, Sam Smith, Schoolboy Q

POParazzi Prediction: 5 Seconds of Summer

5SOS have taken the world by storm with very dedicated fans to boot. This is one year that the Artist to Watch category is full of very popular and talented acts, but it’ll be surprising if the 5SOS boys don’t take this one home.

Video of the Year

iggy

Nominees: ‘Drunk in Love’ – Beyonce feat. Jay-Z, ‘Fancy’ – Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX, ‘Wrecking Ball’ – Miley Cyrus, ‘Happy’ – Pharrell Williams, ‘Chandelier’ – Sia

POParazzi Prediction: ‘Fancy’ – Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX

‘Fancy’ is the music video that finally propelled Iggy Azalea to being a well-known name in the rap and pop industry. To win the Video of the Year would be quite a feat for Iggy, especially so early in her career. This is more of a hopeful wish than a prediction, and I doubt Iggy will be too upset if one of her competition takes home the Moonman. Beyonce’s ‘Drunk in Love’ was an outstanding release from Queen B’s eponymous album, and Miley’s ‘Wrecking Ball’ was certainly a hot topic in the pop industry well after its release. Which fanbase pulled through to get their idol the coveted VMA? We’ll see…

Best Female Video

royals

Nominees: ‘Problem’ – Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea, ‘Partition’ – Beyonce, ‘Fancy’ – Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX, ‘Dark Horse’ – Katy Perry feat. Juicy J, ‘Royals’ – Lorde

POParazzi Prediction: ‘Royals’ – Lorde

Another very fierce race with undeniable talent. The VMA’s are showing much love to Iggy Azalea with two double nominations (Best Female Video and Best Pop Video), but in the end this Moonman should go to Lorde. Another act new on the scene, ‘Royals’ was a song that people couldn’t get out of their head – for better or worse! All in all, every single one of the nominees for Best Female Video offered up a catchy song that listeners wanted more of (or, after over-saturation on the radio – grew to become sick of hearing!)

Best Male Video

edsheeran

Nominees: ‘Sing’ – Ed Sheeran, ‘The Monster’ Eminem feat. Rihanna, ‘All of Me’ – John Legend, ‘Happy’ – Pharrell Williams, ‘Stay With Me’ – Sam Smith

POParazzi Prediction: ‘Sing’ – Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran’s popularity is only gaining, and although there are some big names in the category this year, it’s likely he’ll take home the Moonman.

Best Pop Video

fancy

Nominees‘Problem’ – Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea, ‘Wake Me Up’ – Avicci feat. Aloe Blacc, ‘Fancy’ – Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX, ‘Talk Dirty’ – Jason Derulo feat. 2 Chainz, ‘Happy’ – Pharrell

POParazzi Prediction: ‘Fancy’ – Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX

This category is dominated by collaborations this year, with Pharrell’s video being the only one released by a single artist. Iggy Azalea has two chances of winning, but it’s more likely that ‘Fancy’ will take home the Moonman. If Iggy doesn’t win Video of the Year for ‘Fancy’, Best Pop Video will be a nice consolation prize.

Best Collaboration

monster

Nominees: Ariana Grande & Iggy Azalea (‘Problem’), Beyonce & Jay-Z (‘Drunk in Love’), Chris Brown, Lil Wayne & Tyga (‘Loyal’), Eminem & Rihanna (‘The Monster’), Katy Perry & Juicy J (‘Dark Horse’), Pitbull & Kesha (‘Timber’)

POParazzi Prediction: Eminem & Rihanna (‘The Monster’)

Of these songs, my favorite is probably ‘Timber’, followed by ‘Problem’, but the power of Eminem and Rihanna is undeniable. The two come together and make magic, and giving them a VMA for their collaboration only seems right.

What did you think of the VMA nominations this year? Was your favorite artist snubbed, or did they get an abundance of nominations? Leave a comment with your predictions and be sure to check back after the awards on Sunday!
