Music Video: Dua Lipa – “New Rules”

If you’re under him, you ain’t getting over him…

Dua Lipa is continuing to promote her recently released self-titled debut album with a new music video for “New Rules.” Past songs like “Blow Your Mind” and “Hotter Than Hell” have been all about the love, and “New Rules” changes the pace, with Lipa singing about having an epiphany and the steps it takes to get over a relationship that’s going nowhere.

In the video, Lipa starts off forlorn and heartbroken, surrounded by girl pals who have to convince her to put down her phone and get over the guy who isn’t treating her right. As the video progresses, Lipa’s self-confidence comes through to the point by the end of the video, it’s she that’s telling the rules to one of her gal pals. Ah, the circle of bad hook ups.

It’s a fun and colorful video that’s perfect for the summertime. The track was made for Lipa’s sultry low register, and the high melody pairs nicely with her voice. The only minor setback here is towards the end, when interestingly minimal choreography fails to do much other than look awkward. When I saw Dua Lipa at the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hotel in DC, there was much more energy than this lackluster affair. She’s got it in her, so at least there’s that.

Watch ‘New Rules’ below and enjoy having it stuck in your head for the foreseeable future.
