One Direction have released the music video for their latest single, ‘Steal My Girl’ ahead of their highly anticipated album Four. In both a strategic marketing move and generous gift to their fans, One Direction have given those who pre-order the deluxe edition of Four on iTunes an instant download of five tracks.
I am not One Direction’s target fanbase, so while the song itself doesn’t really appeal to me, it’s obviously a popular song with much allure to 1D’s fans and those who enjoy light and airy romantic, clean tunes. Harry and Liam in particular stand out on the track and in the video, with both the boys sounding great and performing superbly in the video. If I had to pick a favorite of the One Direction boys, it’d be Niall, but sadly ‘Steal My Girl’ is not a video where he shines. His costuming is awkward and a bit of an eyesore; it detracts from both his singing and the fun he’s having on the set that would otherwise make him stand out for the right reasons. He also sounds a bit too auto-tuned, which is sad because on past albums, his vocals sounded just fine to me without so much editing on them.
The clip sees the boys making a fake film, ‘directed’ by Danny DeVito who makes a guest appearance in the music video and gives the most convincing performance of the lot. In the end, DeVito sums the ‘Steal My Girl’ video up quite nicely: “Alright.”
