M.I.A. took to Twitter today to share a lengthy letter her team received from the Paris Saint-Germain FC demanding she remove her music video for the politically charged track ‘Borders’ that was released in November of last year. The entire four page letter can be read below:

This is not the first time M.I.A. has found herself amidst legal action surrounding sports; she was controversially sued by the NFL for displaying the middle finger during her performance in Madonna’s half-time show. One thing is for certain – M.I.A. does not kowtow to anyone when it comes to her message and her art. The letter from PSG, which demands M.I.A. cease promoting the video and the image of their jersey, has had the opposite effect intended. M.I.A. changed her Twitter icon to a photo of her wearing the jersey, and has continued to share the video.

Fans of M.I.A. have been quick to point out the absurdity of the football league’s claims. In the video, M.I.A. is only briefly seen in the jersey, and yet the football league has deemed the perceived damage their reputation has taken from inclusion of a modified jersey to be more important than the video’s overall message of bringing awareness to the refugee crisis.
