5 Seconds of Summer – ‘She’s Kinda Hot’

5 Seconds of Summer have shared the first single from their upcoming sophomore album. ‘She’s Kinda Hot’ takes 5SOS another step away from One Direction’s family-friendly pop boyband image and closer to their end goal of joining the ranks with their idols Blink-182 and Green Day. ‘She’s Kinda Hot’ is a rather safe, fan-girl frenzying type of title that certainly grabbed the attention of their fans – but the track itself is much more mature than the title lets on. The band’s eponymous debut was full of songs to make any girl squeal with lovesick delight – but ‘She’s Kinda Hot’ finds the band in a bad relationship with a psycho girlfriend. After the girlfriend is behind them, the song turns into much more of an uplifting punk anthem than angsty teen sorrow-song.

Hardcore fans of 5 Seconds of Summer have likely picked up on further hints the boys have been dropping about their new album. One phrase that keeps getting repeated is New Broken Scene. Perhaps that’s a title they’re very fond of and we’ll be seeing more of in the future?
