Britney Spears debuted the music video for ‘Pretty Girls’ with Iggy Azalea, the first single from Brit’s upcoming album today. The video shows a fun side to Britney – she looks and sounds great, but sadly the track and its video are brought down by Azalea. Despite best efforts to make Iggy’s style of music work with Britney’s, the result isn’t quite as otherworldly as Britney, Iggy, or their most dedicated fans want to believe. The video is fun and entertaining – but what’s up with the horrible ‘alien’ voice skit and obvious product placement with Iggy fixing Britney’s phone? It’s not that Iggy was exactly a bad actress, but rather the writing / direction was awful; if her ‘character’ is a sexy alien from another planet who joins Britney for a night out and she’s singing the rest of the track in perfect English, why is she acting like she can barely form a sentence in the car with Britney’s friends?
The video gets really good around the three minute mark when the girls arrive at the club, but sadly that’s just as it’s wrapping up. Had the clip shown more of this side of Britney and Iggy, it would’ve been all the better for it. Britney looks like she did in her prime – perhaps the scene itself is a throwback to her ‘Crazy’ video?
In the end, ‘Pretty Girls’ is neither artist’s best work to date. Most certainly a commercial cash-grab, it’s sure to do well and be stuck in everyone’s heads – but the real question is: does everyone want it there?
