Listen: Marina and the Diamonds – ‘Happy’

Few artists are as good to their fans as Marina and the Diamonds. As a part of the campaign leading up to her new album, FROOT, Marina is releasing a new track off the album each month to those that pre-order it as a ‘Froot of the Month’. Genius – she keeps fans’ appetites  whet for the new album and continues to generate buzz for it to the unfortunate souls that haven’t heard of her yet. Last month was the title track FROOT (dubbed ‘grape’ froot of the month), and December’s Froot of the Month is ‘lemon’ along with a new track ‘Happy’.

If you’re expecting ‘Happy’ and the rest of FROOT to be a rave starter like the title track, you’ll be disappointed; ‘Happy’ is a new Marina and the Diamonds ballad. If you’ve been a fan of Marina’s since The Family Jewels, you’re likely to be thrilled upon first listen of the new song. Marina is getting back to the brilliant music she started out making and temporarily diverged from with Electra Heart. (Not to say Electra Heart is anything less than another amazing release from Diamandis; quite the contrary. Sonically, however, it was much more mainstream than The Family Jewels.)

Like I prayed would happen in my review of The Family Jewels, Marina is getting back to her roots and making genuinely touching music that lets her unique and memorable voice speak for itself. Electra Heartwas the much-needed mainstream path Marina needed to take to get her name out there in a sea of artists, and now that she is a relatively well known name, FROOT can allow her to return to the utter brilliance that was the true Marina on The Family Jewels. Fans of Marina’s one of a kind voice and original and inventive lyrics on both albums will not be disappointed if FROOT is as wonderful as its promotional singles are leading us to believe.

Pre-order FROOT today and instantly download ‘FROOT’ and ‘Happy’. The next Froot of the Month will be released on New Year’s Day, January 01, 2015.
